"Finding Our She-Compass" Takes Honorable Mention in Two Categories at the 2018 San Franci

“Belief creates the valor that transforms dreams into reality.”

The quote from the book Finding Our She-Compass: 15 Life Lessons for Women Voyaging Toward Restoration, Reconstruction and Renewal is a perfect way for author Helen Owens to describe the thrill of her recent book festival win.

Owens, who struggles with dyslexia and battled childhood alopecia, received a two-category Honorable Mention at the 2018 San Francisco Book Festival. The event, held annually between May and June, celebrates the best books of the spring season.

The prestigious award honors writers from around the world and features winners in fiction, non-fiction, biography/autobiography, children's books, compilations/anthologies, young adult, how-to, cookbooks, science fiction, business, history, wild card, gay, photography/art, poetry, unpublished, technology and spiritual/religious works. A judging staff of authors, publishers, journalists, agents, and directors present awards based on “general excellence, the author’s passion for telling a good story, and potential of the work to reach a wider audience.”

"My dream was to one day tell my story of overcoming obstacles in a way in which the world could relate. " - Helen Owens

JM Northern Media, producers of the yearly event note that “less than 5 percent of our festival entries are honored with recognition. The awards mark the culmination of months of reading, discussions, analysis and arguing by our judging staff. We are very proud to honor the winners, runners-up, and honorable mentions, which attract entries from around the world."

Owens says, “it’s a great honor for me to receive this award. As a dyslexic one of my dreams was to one day tell my story of overcoming obstacles in a way in which the world could relate."

"Using nautical themes and a sailing ship as metaphors, I'm able to connect with readers through a collection of stories and life lessons that help them on their paths to self-discovery. In addition to publishing the book itself this award is another solidification of my dream.”
